Under ideal circumstances, I'd like to buy the Canon EF 70-200mm L IS F2.8 but the price of it is almost the double of the price of the F4. F4 seems to be a very sharp lens, IS compensation is up tp 3.5-4 stops. It is also lighter in weight, it won't break one's back. F2.8 is as sharp (at least when used at F4), IS compensation is aound 3 stops.
The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0L IS USM Lens has even better image quality and of course, IS. Otherwise, the both of these lenses have impressive image quality. The 70-300L weighs 37.1 oz (1050 grams) while the 70-200L (f/2.8 II) weighs 52.6 oz (1490 grams), meaning that there is an almost 50% weight premium in the bare lens. A Canon 1.4x extender would add an additional 8oz (225 grams). Likewise, the length of the 70-300L is 143mm compared with 199mm for the 70-200L, while the extender adds another 27mm. Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS (covers all formats, 77mm filters, 51.9 oz./1,471g., 4.6'/1.4m close focus) enlarge. The Canon EF 70-210mm f/4 is sharp and works great. The optics are as good as similar current lenses in actual use, although it's soft at f/4 and 210mm. The reason to pay more for the newest lenses are features like Image Stabilization, not optical quality. FOCUSING back to Performance or back to Introduction.
